Club World Cup 2025: Denis Onyango’s Journey with Sundowns

by June 17, 2025

For many fans, adjusting to the new format of the Club World Cup USA 2025 is a challenge. The expanded 32-team tournament has changed global broadcast schedules, making it harder for audiences outside the U.S. to keep up. Still, passionate African football followers are ready—especially those tracking Uganda’s Denis Onyango.

Onyango, playing for South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, is set for his second appearance at the Club World Cup USA 2025. His team faces Ulsan from South Korea at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

“This tournament in the U.S. is a dream come true,” Onyango said. “It’s special—our second time here. But this edition includes clubs from all over the world, making it even bigger.”

In 2016, he guarded the net when Sundowns played in Japan. They lost 2-0 to Kashima Antlers and then 4-1 to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in a placement match.

Since then, Onyango has stepped back as South Africa’s Ronwen Williams took over as first-choice goalkeeper. Nevertheless, he featured 10 times last season as Sundowns secured the league title.

“I may not play every match, but I’m always in the squad,” said the 40-year-old. “The club trusts me. When called upon, I deliver.”

His training remains intense. Recently, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Putting in the work,” alongside a workout video. Clearly, age hasn’t slowed him down.

Onyango traveled to the U.S. with teammates and club legends like Hlompho Kekana, Tiyani Mabunda, and Kennedy Mweene. All appeared in Sundowns’ media day photos.

“It’s my second Club World Cup,” Onyango noted. “I’m the only Ugandan to attend two tournaments with the same club. I’m grateful to Sundowns for believing in me.”

Sundowns, under new coach Miguel Cardoso, rely on forwards Iqraam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro. So far, the duo has netted 42 goals this season.

Meanwhile, tournament rewards have grown dramatically. The 2025 edition offers $2.65 billion in total prize money. The champion will take home $100 million, and each team gets $50 million just for participating.

In opening results, Bayern Munich thrashed Auckland City 10-0, while PSG beat Atletico 4-0. The tournament is heating up.

Onyango’s football journey began with Uganda’s Sharing and SC Villa. He moved on to clubs in Ethiopia and South Africa, eventually landing at Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011.

His accolades include multiple South African league titles, a CAF Champions League trophy, and the 2016 African-based African Player of the Year award.

As Sundowns prepare to take on Ulsan, Onyango’s leadership and experience will be key. His story continues to inspire fans across Uganda and the continent.
