A major DRC military shakeup has begun in Kinshasa following the dramatic arrest of Lieutenant General Pacifique Masunzu and his deputy, Brigadier General Bwange Safari. The two senior officers, detained over allegations of treason and failure to halt rebel advances, were swiftly replaced as the government moved to restore discipline in its military ranks.
New Commander Steps In During DRC Military Shakeup
Major General Abdallah Nyembo officially took charge of the Third Defence Zone of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). His appointment follows Masunzu’s arrest in Kisangani and immediate transfer to Kinshasa for questioning. Authorities accuse the former commanders of failing to prevent the AFC/M23 rebels from capturing Nzibira in Walungu Territory on September 21, a critical loss that triggered deep frustration within senior army leadership.
Why the DRC Military Shakeup Matters
The Third Defence Zone covers North Kivu, South Kivu and Maniema—regions heavily affected by years of conflict, shifting alliances, and repeated offensives by M23/AFC and other armed groups. Gen Masunzu, once considered a loyal and influential Munyamulenge commander, had been appointed in December 2024 to stabilize frontlines and halt rebel progress. His arrest now marks one of the most consequential disciplinary actions taken under President Félix Tshisekedi’s leadership.
During the handover ceremony, Gen Nyembo vowed to tighten command structures, strengthen coordination, and ensure that no further territory is lost. He emphasized the need for disciplined operations, promising civilians that their protection remains a top priority.
A Turning Point in Congo’s Security Strategy
Military officials in Kinshasa say the leadership transition is part of a broader strategy aimed at reinforcing accountability within FARDC. With mounting pressure to reclaim strategic zones and restore stability in the east, the government believes the new command will bring renewed momentum to ongoing operations.
As fighting intensifies across multiple fronts, Gen Nyembo’s leadership will be critical in determining whether FARDC can reassert control, rebuild confidence among civilians, and push back heavily armed rebel formations.
The coming months will reveal whether this sweeping DRC military shakeup can deliver the results Kinshasa urgently needs.
