Authorities have confirmed the tragic death of the driver of a Mitsubishi vehicle involved in a collision with a cement mixer truck at the Nkumba University traffic light along the Entebbe-Kampala expressway.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, resulting in the immediate fatality of the Mitsubishi’s driver.
Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for Traffic Police, identified the deceased as Raphael Okiot, a court advocate and spouse of Kyenjojo Grade I Magistrate, Ms. Faith Irene Kwagala.
According to reports from Mr. Kananura, the cement mixer truck failed to brake as it approached the Nkumba University traffic lights on April 17. The driver’s body was recovered from the Mitsubishi at the scene of the accident.
The wreckage of the collision was subsequently cleared from the road with the assistance of a crane truck summoned by security forces. Both vehicles involved were transported to the Entebbe Main Police Station, where efforts were made to extract the deceased driver’s body from the Mitsubishi.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the cement mixer truck, identified by the license plate UAN 836D, lost control and collided with the barriers in the middle of the road before falling onto the Mitsubishi RVR UBQ 371P on Wednesday morning.
Expressing concern over the frequency of accidents in the area, Mr. Najid Huzaifa, a councilor in the Nkumba ward, emphasized the urgent need for road safety measures.
He noted that the accident occurred at 8 am, and police and security forces had been deployed at the scene for over three hours.
Mr. John Kasimbazi, the Managing Director of Rock Zone Hotel located approximately 20 meters from the crash site, highlighted the dangerous nature of the stretch of road where the accident took place. He emphasized that vehicles often struggle to stop at the traffic lights, leading to frequent collisions.
Urging the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to take action, he called for the installation of warning signs ahead of the traffic lights to alert drivers and prevent further tragedies.
