Although Onyango said they had raided Kalungi Plaza based on intelligence, a source revealed the targeted traders were named by some of the 200 suspects arrested in the recent city crackdown on thugs mugging and stealing phones along Northern Bypass.

Deputy Kampala police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, two days ago revealed that joint security teams had arrested several suspects but zeroed on 204 who had previous criminal records or had been captured by Closed Circuit Television –CCTV cameras.

Owoyesigyire said operations commanded by Kampala Metropolitan police commander, CP Moses Kafeero, came at a time when there were overwhelming complaints from the public about thugs terrorizing them at Northern Bypass.

Barely a fortnight ago, John Owinyi was killed by thugs after he had arrested one of their own for stealing his phone. Owinyi was driving with his two sons in the evening when the thug grabbed his phone.

The deceased jumped out of the vehicle, chased the suspect and arrested him. However, the suspect’s accomplices chased the vehicle and found him stuck in jam. They unleashed violence by hitting his vehicle with stones and one stone landed on his head thus killing him instantly.

Commissioner of Police –CP Fred Enanga, also police spokesperson, identified the alleged ringleaders of Northern Bypass gang as Rwanyaga Shaban, Baba, Alex Matovu, Kenny and Zaina.
