The Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya Oil Road, an essential infrastructure for Uganda’s growing oil and gas sector, has developed large and unusual cracks, raising concerns among local authorities. The road, constructed about 11 years ago by a Turkish company, plays a crucial role in facilitating access to Uganda’s oil-rich regions. This unexpected damage has prompted the Ministry of Works and Transport to order a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the cracks and how to address them.
The Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya Road: A Vital Asset
The Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya road connects vital oil exploration areas to the rest of Uganda, supporting the development of the nation’s burgeoning oil and gas industry. Due to its importance in transporting equipment and personnel to oil extraction sites, the road’s integrity is critical. Yet, despite its relatively recent construction, it has now developed severe cracks, something that is being regarded as highly unusual.
Minister Katumba Wamala Orders Investigation
Following a site visit with his technical team, Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, expressed deep concern over the road’s deterioration. He has called for immediate investigations to ascertain why such large cracks have appeared so soon after the road’s construction. In his statement, Katumba noted that the road’s condition could threaten the safety and efficiency of transportation to oil extraction sites, potentially hampering the oil industry’s operations.
“We will conduct thorough investigations to determine the cause of these cracks and take appropriate measures to fix the road,” Katumba assured the public.
Addressing Additional Road Failures
In addition to the Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya road issues, the Ministry of Works and Transport is also dealing with road failures on the Kabale-Kisoro Road. These failures are largely attributed to environmental factors and unsustainable land-use practices that have compromised embankments, increasing the risk of further road damage. An emergency procurement process has already been initiated to restore these sections and ensure that the roads remain safe for use.
Safety Measures for Affected Road Sections
Motorists traveling on the Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya road and the affected sections of the Kabale-Kisoro Road have been urged to exercise caution. Speed limits have been enforced, and clear traffic guidance and safety signage have been put in place to prevent accidents and ensure the continued safety of road users. The Ministry’s maintenance teams have been notified to implement necessary repairs and safety measures as part of the ongoing efforts to address the issue.
The Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya Oil Road’s unexpected damage is a cause for concern, particularly given its importance to Uganda’s oil and gas sector. With investigations underway and immediate actions being taken to ensure road safety, the Ministry of Works and Transport aims to resolve the issue swiftly. The public and local authorities will be closely monitoring the progress of repairs, which will likely be critical to maintaining the oil sector’s development and infrastructure stability.
