KDB agrees to trade Diary products with Uganda

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has re-opened importation of dairy powdered products that had earlier been banned by the Kenya Dairy Board on March 6th, 2023.

The Principal Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture announced the development in a letter dated March 14th, 2023 addressed to all importers of diary produce.

“Take note that, Importation of products under the East African Community (EAC) protocol refers to goods being imported from outside the East African Community, while goods traded within EAC are referred to as transfers,” the letter reads in part.

Kamtai says the stoppage issued through Kenya Dairy Board letter ref. KDB/MD/SED/1 VOL.5/58 dated March 6, 2023, is hereby suspended to allow for the dairy industry (Import and Export) Regulations 2021 to apply accordingly. “Harry Kamtai” PS to Ministry of Agriculture announce

Tirst deputy prime minister and minister of East African Community Affairs  Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga welcomed the development in a tweet.

“I am delighted to inform the diary industry in Uganda that the ban on milk products has been suspended. Have also had fruitful discussions with the Mr Abdi Dubat, permanent secretary Kenya ministry of East African Community on bilateral issues,”she said.

The Kenya Dairy Board managing director Margaret Kibogy said the ban on powdered milk was intended to protect local farmers from external products.

“In anticipation of the long rains, the Government has stopped the importation of milk powders to cushion the industry from surplus production and low prices,” she said.

The lift of the ban means Ugandan farmers can now export their products to Kenya which is one the biggest consumer of the Ugandan diary products.
