Kenya Launches Taifa-1 into space

Over the weekend, SpaceX launched Kenya’s first earth observation satellite into orbit.

Following takeoff from California, the Taifa-1 satellite was confirmed to have separated from the Falcon-9 rocket about an hour later.

The satellite was designed and developed by a team of Kenyan researchers and will provide valuable data in the areas of agriculture and environmental monitoring in Kenya, particularly during the current historic drought.

The Kenyan Ministry of Defense and the Kenya Space Agency hailed the launch as a major milestone for Kenya’s nascent space economy. The satellite’s multispectral camera will allow for high-quality earth observation data, which can help predict crop yields and improve food security.

Kenya had previously sent its first nano-satellite into space in 2018, and as of 2022, over 50 African satellites have been launched into space, according to Space in Africa, a Nigerian company that monitors African space programs.
