Makerere staff dismissed over Sexual Harassment

by Uganda Times

At Makerere University, several staff members have been dismissed due to their involvement in sexual harassment scandals. Among the six dismissed individuals were one non-teaching staff member and five teaching staff members who were involved in scandals that occurred between 2018 and 2022.

According to Dr Euzobia Mugisha Baine, the director of the Gender Mainstreaming Directorate at Makerere, since 2018, there have been a total of 30 cases of sexual harassment, with six cases resulting in dismissals, one case resulting in an acquittal, and five cases involving investigations that have concluded and involve three staff members and two students. The rest of the cases are still under investigation.

The university defines sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or any unwanted physical, verbal, or nonverbal conduct of a sexual nature, and it can occur between lecturers, students, and administrators/lecturers and students.

Dr. Mugisha stated that the most reported cases involve lecturers to students and are mostly attributed to mismanagement of students’ marks. The university is implementing an ICT-based approach to uploading marks to a student portal accessible by the university administration to address this issue.

The university is also striving to improve the welfare of its students and curb sexual harassment by accrediting all hostels outside the university and meeting with their owners to discuss improvement strategies.
