The NRM primaries July 17 will proceed as planned, according to the party’s Electoral Commission. During a press conference in Kampala, Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi addressed the media directly. He dismissed recent rumours suggesting that the elections had been postponed.
“There have been many rumours claiming that the elections were postponed. I want to make it clear — the elections for Members of Parliament will take place this Thursday, 17th, across all 72,000 villages,” Dr. Odoi said. He also urged all candidates to prepare in line with the official party guidelines.
On polling day, voters must assemble at their designated venues by 10:00 a.m. Officials will confirm attendance using a roll call. Voting will run from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Members will vote by lining up behind the poster or agent of their chosen candidate.
NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong stressed the importance of the village register. He warned that only individuals whose names appear on that list would vote. “If you are a candidate, don’t disqualify yourself by assuming there is no register. Every village will have its register by Thursday morning. We shall strictly use it to elect our leaders. If your name is not on the register, you will not participate,” Todwong explained.
Moreover, Todwong revealed that party registers are currently en route to districts. From there, local teams will deliver them to sub-counties and villages before the election begins. This process, he said, ensures voter verification and election transparency.
In addition, Todwong cautioned candidates against divisive behavior. He condemned the use of religion, tribalism, or money to influence voters. “We have received reports of some candidates using religion, tribalism, and money to divide our people. We want to warn them to stop. Our party members should conduct themselves civilly and respect one another,” he emphasized.
Ultimately, the NRM primaries July 17 represent a key moment in Uganda’s electoral roadmap. With internal competition intensifying, the party leadership has prioritized discipline, fairness, and transparency. Voters, candidates, and election officials all have a role to play in ensuring a credible and peaceful process.
