NRM Suspends Campaigns Amid Violence in Isingiro and Kalaki

by July 8, 2025

The NRM suspends campaigns in Isingiro South and Kalaki counties following rising violence and intimidation during the 2025 electoral process. The ruling party’s Electoral Commission has taken this step to restore order and ensure peaceful campaigning in the two regions.

At a press briefing held at the party’s Kyadondo offices, the commission chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, explained that incidents of violence forced the NRM to suspend campaigns in Isingiro South after clashes led to bloodshed and property damage. He said, “The situation escalated into physical confrontations. We will not allow campaigns to continue until calm returns.”

The NRM suspends campaigns in Isingiro South as it summons all parliamentary candidates for a meeting to discuss the situation. This move aims to bring candidates and their supporters together to restore peace. Dr. Odoi also revealed a similar suspension and meeting scheduled for Kalaki County due to rising tensions that threaten the electoral process.

In Isingiro South, four parliamentary contenders face a tense atmosphere after violent clashes erupted last Friday in Kikagate Sub-county. Supporters of candidates Byarugaba Alex Bakunda and Mujuni Maari Asensio clashed, leading to vandalism and arrests. Police have detained ten people following an intelligence-led operation to restore order.

The NRM suspends campaigns in Bwamba County as well, after one candidate suffered severe verbal abuse requiring hospital care in Nairobi. Dr. Odoi confirmed, “We have halted campaigns in Bwamba until it is safe to resume.” Additionally, the commission monitors Mbale, warning that campaigns could also be suspended there if misconduct continues.

Despite these setbacks, the NRM suspends campaigns only in affected areas, maintaining that nomination exercises across the country were largely successful, with 291 candidates approved for various party positions. The commission has also started reviewing registrar appointments and investigating complaints to strengthen electoral integrity.

Dr. Odoi emphasized the commission’s independence and warned politicians not to interfere with registrar appointments. He also addressed concerns over illegal additions to voter registers in parts of Eastern Uganda and Rubanda. The commission plans to deliver the final voters’ registers directly to villages without public displays to prevent manipulation.

Although delays in the election budget caused some disruptions, including candidates interrupting meetings, Dr. Odoi assured the public of a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. The budget is expected imminently, and the commission promises firm action against any indiscipline.

In summary, the NRM suspends campaigns in specific regions to curb violence and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. The party commission calls on candidates and supporters to respect these measures and work toward peaceful elections.
