Passengers Quarantined at Kirigime Guest House Undergoing COVID-19 Tests
Health workers preparing to collect samples from quarantined passangers

Andrew Mbonya, a Laboratory Manager at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital says that they are collecting samples through nasal secretions from the back of the nose and throat, for tests that will guarantee that all persons released from Quarantine do not have the COVID-19 virus.

Health authorities have started collecting samples from passengers quarantined at Kirigime Guest House in Kabale district.  These include 85 people who were intercepted at Katuna border on March 22 while travelling in two Jaguar buses from Rwanda to Uganda.

They were later isolated at Kirigime Guest House from where they were monitored by coronavirus surveillance teams in the area for at least 14 days. However, with just a day left to complete their quarantine days, health authorities on Saturday paraded a team of laboratory, experts to collect samples for analysis.

Andrew Mbonya, a Laboratory Manager at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital says that they are collecting samples through nasal secretions from the back of the nose and throat, for tests that will guarantee that all persons released from Quarantine do not have the COVID-19 virus.

Kabale District Health Officer Alfred Besigensi says that passengers’ expectations of leaving the quarantine on Sunday are not possible because their samples will be sent to the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) Entebbe for analysis before they are allowed to step out of the Quarantine Centre. Besigensi says that the results are expected on Wednesday next week.

Besigensi says that the changes are beneficial to the affected passengers and other members of the public in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Uganda has so far confirmed 48 cases of Corona Virus, according to the Ministry of Health.
