Police in Masaka Sub-region are investigating a violent robbery in which armed assailants attacked the manager of a coffee factory and stole Shs50 million. The Masaka robbery foiled occurred on Tuesday when five armed men ambushed Mr. Andrew Kaggwa, the manager of Mazima Bugaga Coffee Factory in Kyotera District.
According to preliminary police findings, security personnel received a tip-off about the robbers’ escape route. They intercepted the suspects at Kizigo Village in Kyanamukkaka Sub-county, Masaka District. One suspect, Lawrence Ssenuumu, was shot dead during the operation. He was believed to have been carrying the stolen money.
Southern regional police spokesperson Mr. Twaha Kasirye confirmed that four suspects escaped, but officers recovered two guns. The guns are believed to have been used in a series of robberies in the area. Mr. Kasirye praised the detectives for their quick response, which prevented further criminal activity.
Police also recovered a motorcycle with registration number UFV 988N. They believe the gang used the motorcycle in previous robberies. “We took the deceased’s body to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem. We urge the public to share any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects,” Mr. Kasirye said.
The Masaka robbery foiled attack is part of a rising trend. Attacks on coffee traders have surged recently, driven by the high prices of the commodity. Residents believe that the recovery of the two firearms could help reduce the region’s growing insecurity, which has seen an increase in violent crimes over the last six months.
