Renovation of Old Taxi Park Starts Next Week-KCCA ED

The KCCA Acting Executive Director, Andrew Kitaka, says they want to exploit the ongoing lockdown to work on the carpet of the park, its drainage system and surrounding to prevent running water from storming the Park.

Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA has unveiled its plan to start renovating the Old taxi Park next week.

The KCCA Acting Executive Director, Andrew Kitaka, says they want to exploit the ongoing lockdown to work on the carpet of the park, its drainage system and surrounding to prevent running water from storming the Park.

He disclosed this while speaking to our reporter as the Authority toured its projects around Kampala. The move to renovate the old taxi park has previously met resistance from taxi operators who feared that KCCA was plotting to tactically eject them, something the Authority vehemently disputes.

Also private developers that own some plots in the Park were opposed to the development for fear of losing their land. However, Kitaka says cabinet directed that renovation the works on the Park last year as KCCA settles grievances held by different parties.

The renovation was also affected by lack of finances. However, KCCA Spokesperson, Peter Kaujju says they have written to Ministry of Finance seeking funding for the project.  He also says they are also looking at diverting funds from other KCCA activities to be able to implement the project soon as they wait for more funding from government.

Last year, KCCA conducted a feasibility study of the development with funding from the Dutch government. However, the matter is yet to be concluded. The old taxi park hosts thousands of vehicles but has the worst carpet compared to other Parks in the central business areas.
