On the 22nd of December 2023, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni convened with a delegation of surgeons hailing from Mulago National Referral Hospital, marking their achievement in orchestrating Uganda’s inaugural kidney transplant at the facility just last Wednesday.
Leading the delegation was the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who, during a courtesy call at State House, Entebbe, apprised President Museveni of this momentous medical milestone. The procedure involved providing a kidney to Kiyemba Mark Maurice of Munyonyo, Kampala, with the generous donation coming from his brother, Steven Mpagi.
The surgical team, spearheaded by Professor Frank Asiimwe, collaborated with visiting doctors from Yashoda Hospitals in India, under the leadership of Dr. A. Sashi Kiran, to execute this groundbreaking operation. President Museveni conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to the Mulago surgeons and their Indian counterparts for the success of this historic endeavor.
Beyond commendation, President Museveni pledged unwavering support to the medical professionals, aiming to bolster their pursuit of self-sustainability in terms of both human resources and essential equipment. Dr. Aceng expressed gratitude for the President’s continuous backing of the Ministry of Health and sought additional assistance, particularly in the realms of training more kidney specialists, transplant surgeons, and the procurement of state-of-the-art medical equipment.
