The trucks registration numbers UAX 996G and UBF 019S which were transporting traders and their commodities from Amach market, Amach sub-county in Lira District to Lamwo district caught fire at 12pm at a traffic checkpoint in Adwila, Boroboro parish in Lira District.

The police fire brigade from Lira Central Police Station rushed to the scene and controlled fire before it could spread to the other vehicles which were parked for inspection.

Most of the traders on board the trucks sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital.  Their merchandise which included food was also destroyed by the fire.

Michael Odongo, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, says that while attempting to park, one of the trucks knocked the other that was carrying jerrycans of waragi, causing a spill of the alcohol which sparked off the fire.

He says that the trucks had been stopped by traffic officers doing a routine check on vehicles.
