Tragic Road Crash Mars Bobi Wine’s Campaign in Hoima

by September 12, 2023

A road crash marred the campaign of National Unity Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in Hoima as he campaigned for party flag-bearer Moses Aguda in the district LC5 chairperson byelection. The incident occurred as Bobi Wine’s convoy moved to Kigorobya town council, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

Bobi Wine’s campaign visit to Hoima district attracted hundreds of enthusiastic supporters, including boda-boda cyclists and youth. He was in the district to rally support for Moses Aguda, the NUP flag-bearer in the upcoming byelection.

During the campaign convoy’s movement, one of the vehicles experienced a mechanical problem, triggering a stampede among the supporters. Tragically, the incident claimed the life of Norman Mugisa, a resident of Kiryateete West in Hoima city and a staff member of Buhimba town council in Kikuube district.

The stampede resulted in ten individuals sustaining severe injuries, prompting their immediate transport to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention. However, the vehicle responsible for the crash was not identified as it was removed from the scene before the police arrived.

Albertine Police region spokesperson Julius Hakiiza stated that an investigation into the incident had commenced. He urged witnesses who could identify the vehicle that caused the crash to come forward and inform the police. Hakiiza attributed the crash to reckless driving.

Following the tragic incident, Bobi Wine, who was scheduled to hold a rally in Ndwoli village, Kitoba sub-county, chose to attend the burial of the crash victim instead. The district is preparing for the election of its new district chairperson on Thursday, September 14.
