Ugandan Curfew: Over violators 60 arrested and 30+ vehicles impounded

At least 60 people who allegedly defied the curfew on day one have been arrested, and a total of 35 vehicles and 27 motorcycles were impounded.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, some of the arrested were found at Kasimbiri trading centre in Wakiso district.

“Unfortunately, one of them sustained some injuries when he tried to physically attack our Police officer who was on duty,” said Onyango.

He adds that the 60 suspects are currently detained in different police stations and will be charged accordingly, depending on circumstances under which they were arrested.

In addition, Police said that most of the vehicles and the motorcycles were impounded at checkpoints.

“We appeal to Ugandans return to their respective homes on time to avoid panicky movements, running around and carelessly crossing roads as this may lead to accidents,” added Onyango.

He further noted that as part of the Joint Task Force on implementation of COVID-19 directives /guidelines, security forces are looking forward to working together with the people to ensure that the significance of the curfew and the need to be home by 7:00pm, is recognised until COVID-19 is defeated.
