The Buganda Insurance Scheme now offers affordable healthcare to all Kabaka’s subjects. For just Shs165,000 a year, members gain access to vital medical and financial benefits. As a result, even low-income earners can now afford quality care.
Each insured member receives Shs2 million for outpatient treatment. In addition, those with chronic illnesses also receive Shs2 million to help manage long-term conditions. If someone suffers permanent disability, the scheme gives them Shs1.5 million to help them live independently.
Furthermore, hospitalized members receive Shs30,000 per day for up to 15 days. In case of death, the family receives Shs2 million to support funeral arrangements.
Ms. Nakate from the Ministry of Social Services explained these benefits. According to her, the scheme aims to help those who cannot afford private healthcare. Therefore, her ministry and the Nnabagereka’s office are leading awareness campaigns to educate all Kabaka’s subjects about the Buganda Insurance Scheme.
Unfortunately, many people only seek help during health camps. As a consequence, they miss early detection and treatment. This scheme encourages consistent and early medical care to avoid serious illness.
Mr. Edward Kaggwa Ndagala, Executive Director of Kabaka’s Foundation, confirmed that the scheme has partnered with faith-based hospitals. These include Nsambya, Kibuli, Mengo, and Aga Khan University Hospital. Because of these partnerships, beneficiaries can access trusted care across the region.
Moreover, the scheme covers critical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, hypertension, and heart disease. Initially, it will roll out in counties that previously hosted health camps. Later, the kingdom will expand it to all 18 Buganda counties.
Overall, the Buganda Insurance Scheme delivers practical, affordable healthcare to the people. By supporting the most vulnerable, the kingdom strengthens its commitment to health and dignity for all.
