Criminal case filed against ICC over Putin’s Arrest warrant

by Uganda Times

The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case against the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor and judges who issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges related to the deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia.

According to the committee, there are no grounds for criminal liability on Putin’s part, and as per a 1973 United Nations convention, heads of state enjoy absolute immunity.

The ICC’s move requires its member states to arrest Putin and hand him over to The Hague for trial if he visits their territories. However, Russia has dismissed the warrant as legally invalid, citing its non-membership in the ICC’s founding treaty.

The ICC officials under investigation are prosecutor Karim Khan, a British lawyer, and judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Salvatore Aitala, and Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez. Ukraine has alleged that more than 16,000 children have been unlawfully transported to Russia or Russian-controlled territories since the conflict began.
