Gulu Residents Embrace Door to Door Courier Services Amid Lockdown

Delivering goods and services to residences in Gulu and around the outskirts in Gulu Municipality now ranges between the range from at least 2,000 up to 20,000 depending on distance with a radius of four kilometers and nature of the consignment.

Residents in Gulu have embraced door to door courier services by Boda-Boda riders following 14 days’ national lockdown against deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19) Disease that began on April 1st.

Like elsewhere across Uganda, residents in Gulu are confined at home following President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s declaration barring all movements of people; private and public vehicles to combat the spread of COVID-19 infections.

Hundreds of boda-boda riders most of who are acquaintances to the clients are booked on phone and instructed to buy the needed essential commodities from town and deliver them to places such Kasubi; Kabedo Opong; Kolo Quarters, Layibi Techo, Lacor and Unyama among others.

According to Charles Akena, a resident of Layibi Division, his family has been sending trusted riders to buy essential needs and food items from markets thus they find it time-saving and cost-effective during this lock down period.

Another resident, Kevin Omona of Pece Division the restricted movements of people in the town in the wake of coronavirus pandemic has left her with no choice but to bestow her trust on boda-bodas to purchase essential goods for her family’s upkeep.

According to Gulu City Boda-Boda Association Chairperson, Simon Wokorach, individuals using their courier services should deal with riders that are trusted to avoid them disappear with customers’ money and belongings.

Wokorach tips their clients to record the number plate and contacts plus names of the riders they use and their stages for easy follow up in case of any eventuality.
