The Parliament of Uganda has recently passed a bill that imposes harsh penalties on individuals who engage in homosexual acts or identify as LGBTQ.
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, emphasized that lawmakers will not hesitate to protect the sovereignty, morals, and culture of Uganda. The new legislation provides for a prison sentence of over 10 years for those who violate the law.
President Museveni has also expressed his support for the bill, referring to gay people as “deviants,” but also stating that the amendments would be subject to scientific findings.
However, it is crucial to note that this legislation violates the human rights of LGBTQ individuals and discriminates against them based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, contravening international human rights standards.
It is essential to promote respect for the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill now awaits President Museveni’s approval.
