The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) recently cancelled the Mature Age Entry certificate awarded to Robert Mugabe, a parliamentary aspirant for Kitagwenda County. This decision followed an investigation that revealed the documents used to qualify for the examination were fraudulently obtained.

On January 2, 2026, IUIU’s Office of the Academic Registrar issued formal communication, recalling and cancelling Certificate No. IUKC-ME021MAY-139. This certificate had been granted under the Mature Age Entry Scheme.

“The University discovered that the document(s) you submitted to qualify for the May 2021 Mature Age Entry Aptitude Test were fraudulently obtained,” stated the Academic Registrar.

Robert Mugabe’s Certificate Cancelled Due to Fraudulent Documents

IUIU conducted a thorough review of the matter. The University’s Executive Board addressed the issue during its 382nd meeting, held on December 31, 2025. The affected individual and his legal representative were present during the meeting.

Following extensive deliberation, the Executive Board decided to cancel Certificate No. IUKC-ME021MAY-139. This decision complied with Section 7.4(iii) of the General University Examination Regulations (2023), which provides guidelines on certificate cancellations. Consequently, the University nullified the certificate and revoked all associated academic rights and privileges.

“The certificate issued to you under the Mature Age Entry Scheme is now nullified. All rights, privileges, or academic benefits arising from the certificate are withdrawn,” emphasized the University.

Return of the Mature Age Entry Certificate and Legal Consequences

In addition, IUIU directed the holder of the cancelled certificate to return the original document to the Office of the Academic Registrar within fourteen (14) days from receiving the notice.

Failure to comply with this directive could result in legal or administrative action, as deemed necessary by the University. The University is prepared to enforce any further steps to uphold its regulations and integrity.

Dr. Adam A. Alli, IUIU’s Academic Registrar, communicated the decision. Additionally, senior management, including the Rector, Vice Rectors for Academic Affairs and Finance, University Secretary, and the relevant law firms were notified.

Impact of the Certificate Cancellation on Mugabe’s Election Campaign

This development is particularly significant, as Uganda prepares for its upcoming general elections. It highlights IUIU’s unwavering commitment to academic integrity and its strict enforcement of examination and admission regulations.

The cancellation of Robert Mugabe’s certificate may also influence his eligibility for the elections. Educational credentials are vital for parliamentary candidates, and this issue could impact his chances as the election draws nearer.
